Oliver Sain & Friends: museum, school & studio
Oliver Sain played a vital role in the St. Louis music scene, not only as an artist, but as a teacher. His love of music and his ability to foster that love in others left a profound mark on his community. Upon his passing in 2003, his wife Ruby decided to convert Oliver’s former home and recording studio into a community school, museum and recording studio in which Oliver’s legacy could continue to impact both the music community and the surrounding urban community.
SOA shared this desire and worked pro-bono to design a renovation and addition plan that helps continue the Sain’s vision of improving people’s lives through music.

Columbia College - Science Building
SOA assembles a unique and appropriate team in response to the specific needs of each project. To provide Columbia College with the required expertise in the design of the science lab portion of their building, SOA included an additional architecture and engineering consultant to ensure that complex requirements of the lab design were met.
When we believe other specialized professionals will help your project, we recruit them to join our team, giving you the benefits of global expertise without compromising local attention.

University of Missouri Children’s Hospital: 5th Floor Pediatric and Adolescent Unit
SOA worked intensely with MU staff and administration to analyze and understand how the hospital delivers patient care. The resulting space layout helps the staff deliver care more efficiently, with less opportunity for error, and improved infection control while creating a welcoming environment for children and their families.
“SOA always brings compassion and empathy to our MUHC projects. In the recent project to move Children’s Hospital to a different campus in Columbia, their sensitivity to patient and family centered care issues impressed administration, physicians, nurses, and staff.”
- Clarissa Easton AIA, Chief Facilities Officer, University of Missouri Health Care

Missouri Governor’s Mansion
Besides the obvious role in providing the overall project design, an architect’s principal duty is akin to that of a gatekeeper who controls the portal through which the important project details and decisions flow. The architect monitors most aspects of the project from start to finish, coordinating with the various interested parties to ensure work is done on time and within budget.
In renovating the 137 year-old Missouri Governor’s Mansion, SOA led the team of consultants, contractors and government agencies including the State Office of Historical Preservation in the intricate task of renovating this state treasure. The team effort resulted in the renovation and repairs being done on time, under budget and the achievement of two honors: the Merit Award for Design & Historic Preservation from the Mid-Missouri AIA and, the 2009 McReynolds Award from the Missouri Alliance for Historic Preservation.

Columbia College - Master Plan
Developing a master plan to guide the physical development of your facility or campus in size, form, character and environment is extremely important to ensure that each project you do works towards a cohesive whole. Master plans include proposed new building growth while at the same time addressing renewal of buildings and defining outdoor spaces that unify all functions on your site.
SOA has led Columbia College in the formation of their campus master plan, resulting in cost-savings from a forward-looking approach to physical growth.
