Columbia is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in this Country and one of the major factors is our strong school system. In Columbia, we are very fortunate to have such a strong public school system. Over recent decades, Columbia has seen significant growth and Columbia Public Schools (CPS) has fostered this growth with consistently high quality education for students of all ages. To meet this population demand and anticipate future growth, CPS began planning for a new comprehensive high school many years ago. Then in 2007, in partnership with DLR Group, SOA was presented with the opportunity to work on the planning and design of a new 300,000 square foot high school for Columbia Public Schools. Flash forward four and a half years to today and Columbia Public School’s new Battle High School is nearing the halfway point of construction.

At SOA we enjoy an occasional relaxing lunch at some of Columbia’s green spaces near our office. We also enjoy keeping our sketching skills sharpened with what we call “sketch-offs”. We have been having sketch-offs for some time, but today is the first one shared with our readers.

Today’s weather was just too nice to pass up a sketch-off outing - today even qualified as one of Brad Stegeman’s “perfect weather days”. These sketches are samplings from today’s lunch at the plaza between the Boone County Government Center and the Boone County Courthouse. Each of these sketches were “finished” in 5 minutes - this helps us stay focused on what we feel is important in each or on what we are trying to communicate in each sketch.
If you would like to join us, or just hang out with us during a sketch-off lunch, let us know and we’ll be sure to invite you to wherever our next outing will take us!
