University of Missouri Women’s and Children’s Hospital

University of Missouri Children's Hospital

With University Hospital’s 2003 purchase of Columbia Regional Hospital (CRH), SOA became involved in strategic discussions to transform CRH into a Women’s and Children’s Hospital. We are proud to have been part of the design team for the first three projects to begin the transformation, the 3rd Floor Birthing Center, 2nd floor Neonatal ICU, and Health Pavilion OB/GYN clinic.

In 2007 University Hospital temporarily abandoned notions to relocate the Children’s component to CRH, and consulted with HDR and SOA to master plan renovation of University Hospital 6th and 7th Floors.  Although renovations would have given Children’s Hospital an updated look, private patient rooms, enhanced ancillary space and improved care delivery, the limitations of this potential renovation renewed University Hospital’s commitment to their vision of a free standing Women’s and Children’s Hospital and relocation to CRH.  In fall of 2008 SOA again joined University Hospital to continue the CRH transformation.

From October 2008 through August 2009, SOA designed the 5th Floor Pediatric and Adolescent Units, 4th Floor Pedicatric ICU, KMB 3rd Floor Pediatric Short Stay and Children’s Blood Disorders and Cancer Unit.  The aggressive schedule required continuous consistent attention, however working alongside administration, physicians and staff with strong convictions for patient and family care, and commitment to their vision made it an incredibly enjoyable and rewarding project.

On September 14 we anxiously awaited word that the move was complete. SOA is proud to have been part of such a special project for mid-Missouri.  Our sincerest thanks to everyone we worked with for helping to make this project a success!

Shelley Simon leading the tour at Columbia College: Missouri Hall

from the Thursday, June 17, 2010, article in the Columbia Missourian . . .

“COLUMBIA—Columbia College’s Missouri Hall used to be dark, covered in asbestos and mold, and home to the occasional dead bird, said Shelley Simon of Simon Oswald Architecture as she gave a tour to a group of about 10 people.

A lot has changed since the hall underwent a renovation that was completed in 2006.  The building has since received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver certification — the first building in Columbia to do so.”

SOA and Scoop Tackle Hunger Head On at CANstruction 2010

Posted: 2010 03 09 In: what others say

” . . . Scoop, the adorable yellow bulldozer known for his role in Bob the Builder, grins widely. His body is made from cans upon cans of refried beans strategically stacked and taped firmly together, and his wheels are made from cans of tuna. Two large Styrofoam bowls have been colored and taped to his front, creating Scoop’s signature bugged-out eyes.
